I prefer this model (WJ) to the next (WK). Mercedes owned Chrysler at this stage and the Grand Cherokee has a lot of Mercedes in it. The Laredo is my pick. The other models have a more complex air conditioning system which gives problems. In my experience the WJ Grand Cherokee has the reliability of a Toyota 4.7L single overhead cam motor.
