Apr 09, 2007 · Try removing the ac-97 and any other audio, in System Properties/ Device Manager.. then boot into safe mode , then remove any other audio you see in device manager. make sure you have the latest drivers available first, then reboot after the above process and install from those new drivers.

Apr 20, 2010 · I was running XP for the past 5 years with no audio distortion problems. I installed Windows 7 and now the audio becomes distorted, like it is clipped in bit rate. The drivers for the Realtek AC'97 is v6.0.1.6293 from 9/16/2008 installed from windows update. I have tested the audio with head phones and speakers with the same effect.
