Aluminum does have some drawbacks, however. As a metal, it's not as strong as iron and doesn't hold up to high levels of heat as well. Many early aluminum block engines had problems with cylinders warping, leading to concerns over durability. Those problems have been largely solved, however, and aluminum has clearly asserted itself as the future of engines due to its weight-saving properties.Author: Patrick E. George

Apr 20, 2019 · A comparable aluminum engine would weigh significantly less. The other major problem with iron engines is that the engine blocks can be very prone to rusting if the proper coolant is not used. Aluminum engines have the benefit of being significantly lighter than the equivalent iron engine without having a shorter life if they are not abused.

The issue with this is these pistons can't be used with the aluminium engine block as contact between two aluminium surfaces creates large amounts of friction so one must be cast iron, either the piston or the block. The common solution for this problem was to line the cylinder walls with cast iron.

The end result of this design flaw is that the rear-most spark plugs on the engine's heads tend either randomly shoot out of the block while driving, or get stuck while in the process of removal. When hard steel sticks to soft aluminum, the aluminum will inevitably give way first.

The Ford Triton V10 engine is a 10-cylinder engine with five cylinders in each bank. The engine is made of an iron block, whereas the spark plugs are made of aluminum and steel threads. Therefore, due to differences in the expansion rate of the metals when heated, the spark plugs tend to pop out because aluminum expands more than steel.
