Hughesnet has an implemented Fair Access Policy (FAP) that when triggered will slow your speeds that YOU PAY FOR down to close to around 56k uplink speed. That means on their Home plan, you're paying $60/month for a certain speed but you're getting less that what you paid for.

Apr 20, 2010 · Hughesnet offers terrible customer service. They don't explain the Fair Access Policy before you sign up. If you use McAfee or try to look at any u-tube videos, or even play an on-line game, you go over your 200 mb limit in 24 hours, and then you can't get on the internet at all for 24 hours.

I've been a reasonably happy customer of HughesNet's (formerly Direcway) satelite internet service for nearly four years. Since April 2007, my satisfaction level has gone from 90% to ZERO. They have always had a Fair Access Policy (FAP) to limit broadband access. However, prior to April, I only exceeded the FAP on two or three occasions.
