If you purchase directly from Disney, they will play up your ability to use your points for stays other than DVC, like Adventures by Disney or the Disney Cruise Line. But these are negotiated annually, so the points requirement can change all the time. They are very points expensive. Same with Disney hotel rooms. DVC points are best used for DVC.
