Jul 04, 2016 · Westie are pro to skin problems, mostly yeast, so a diet without yeast is the most appropriate one and wet pouches are ok so not too much protein, contrary to what one would be told. I noticed my vet asked me to come down every 2 days for ear flush with saline then gently clear the ears from any debris that then come out easily.

Jan 09, 2011 · For the ears, a ear culture should be taken to identify what bacteria is in the ear canal, and some choices for the most appropriate medication to kill it. For ear cleaners, I would ask your vet for something non-alcohol based that is more soothing, and I am a huge fan of "Triz EDTA" cleaner for bacterial infections.

Most puppies will have erect ears by the time they are 3 or 4 months old. Some puppies never have erect ears, which is considered a fault. It is rare that I have a puppy whose ears do not stand up by the time they are an adult. (I only know of one) I have been told that if you trim the hair on the ears and tape them, it will help the ears stand up.

West Highland White Terriers are often more tolerant toward other dogs and cats than many other terriers are, especially dogs and cats who belong to their own family. But many Westies are still dominant or aggressive toward strange dogs. Westies should not be trusted off-leash.

Upstanding ears like a Westie's can also catch foreign objects. (The upstanding ears can also be an advantage -ears that fold over the ear canals can also be damper and make better incubators for yeast, mites and bacteria.) In addition, dogs' ears normally - just like a humans’ - produce a dark waxy material.

How To Tape Floppy Ears! N ormally, your pup's ears will stand up within 8 - 12 weeks, although it may rarely take up to six months for the cartilage to become strong enough to hold the ears up. Several years ago we had a Westie whose ears did not stand until she was 6 months of age. This is rare. During this time, teething uses up most of the cartilage.

Sep 08, 2008 · Atopic dermatitis is very common in Westies, so try asking your vet if it's a possibility. It usually occurs when the dog becomes hypersensitive to dust mites, fleas or food, and shows this as an allergic reaction. There is no definitive blood test or any other test to diagnose this, btw, so I don't know what your vet wants to test for?
