If I use my points to book the Cottage week RCI say I must 'spend' about 180, 000 points. The rate is apparently 300 points are 'worth' £1. However to purchase points the rate is approximately 140 points per pound. So the 'exchange rate' seems to be about half and the cottage week will actually cost me £1, 300 plus the RCI booking fees etc.

So disappointed in RCI! As of January 1st, they changed the benefits and now can only use 2000 points per night on hotel stays. The points partner benefit where I could use up to 50% of my points on hotel stays was very beneficial but now that I cannot do that, this program is no longer useful for me.

The RCI Weeks program is the more traditional arrangement you describe above -- you use your own week at your home resort, or deposit it with RCI for an exchange at another Weeks resort (assuming availability during the time(s) you want to go, etc....
