1996 Ford Windstar fuel tank has a crack in it and is leaking fuel I see the recall only effaced 1995 Windstar but apparently the problem was not fixed on the 1996 Windstar because mine has a 3 inch crack in it. I do not know if some of the 1996 Windstar were in this recall. - Yukon, OK, USA10/10

1996 Ford Windstar caught on fire in the steering column. Whiled parked with the engine off, but radio running, consumer saw smoke coming under hood in front of steering wheel. Speed control detection switch was the cause of fire.10/10

However, after doing some research, this appears to be a very common problem with 1996 ford windstar's. The only solution appears to require a rebuilt transmission. But, again nhsta complaints include owners having to have transmission rebuilt more than once.
