I appreciate how frustrating this situation would be for you, but I don't think it is limited to only budget carriers like AirAsia. As someone else said, you are travelling on a separate booking from your mother and it is almost like travelling on a different carrier-- as per their conditions of carriage, they don't have any responsibility there.
