I realize that broadway.com is a ticketing scam, by which I mean that they mark up your tickets with outrageous fees. I've always known that there are such sites but this frequent theater goer never actually noticed that broadway.com is one of them.

I don't think you should worry about using broadwaybox. I have gotten tickets through them before and I have never had any problem with them. As written above, you don't actually buy the ticket from them, just get the codes, but in all the cases I have had no trouble buying at short notice and picking up the tickets at the box office.
