The local shop that is fabricating a straight thru pipe for me said that they are using 439 for the pipe and 304 for the flanges & mounts, etc. Their website www.stebro.net also indicates the same. The reason he gave was 439 is softer & easier to bend. From the research I did, it does sound like its an inferior material for exhaust than 304.
