I have been using the 400 for over one year without a single complaint. I do not mind priming its pump, but Marineland should consider an improvement in this regard. I've used other power filters (hang on the back types). This one is the best. It's quiet and very efficient. Highly recommend.

My only complaint however is the replacement cartridges. I have a huge pile of carbon in the bottom of the box. I really need the carbon in the cartridge. Aug 20, 2013 · This doesn't effect the performance of the filter, just makes it a little tricky to remove baskets during maintenance. If I were you, I would go with the SunSun and sponge filter combo. I have a 40 gallon tank, and run with a Marineland Emperor 280 and a sponge filter. The combo does great for me. On another note, goldfish are known to be messy.
