I sent for and received a Pay as you go SIM which I installed in a new phone and topped it up with 10.00. The only calls I made on it were to Orange/EE to report fault registering on their website and 1 call to a land line to test phone (10 second call).

Pay as you go data sim cannot be topped up. Purchased a pay as you go data sim card for use while on holiday. This worked fine for a week without any issues. When the data ran out I bought 20 euro top up at the local phone shop in Spain. I received a text thanking me for topping up. However, no access to data. Complete waste of 20 euros.

Bottom line is, If you want to go on vacation every year, set aside $200 to $300 every month and pay for it outright. Once it is plugged in, you just call the customer service number and it is hooked up, ready to go.
