Never by a Travelcard or Oyster in advance. Visitor Oyster can only hold PAYG (no Travelcards) and there's a fee to buy it (rather than a refundable deposit with the standard version) but I think the card makes a nice momento/souvenir so I'm not as hard on it as some people.

We purchased two Oyster cards at the Heathrow Terminal 5 tube kiosk. We paid £15 each - £5 refundable deposit and £10 travel credit. Keep your record card or receipt with you, so you can prove your ticket type & expiration, if your Oyster card fails to read. I've had my Oyster card from the very start of the scheme, and rarely have a problem. One thing - the card needs to be placed on the reader, not tapped. (I don't know why they don't print this on the back of the cards TBH).

The lady told me it was because my Oyster card was in debit so I had to go to the kiosk and they said I was £1 in debit. I don't understand how that can happen - surely if there isn't enough PAYG money on my card to complete a tube journey in zone 1 or whatever, the exit barriers wouldn't let me through.
